SANDS is a non-profit organization dedicated to being the primary source of information and support for individuals with Down Syndrome in Southern Arizona. The organization connects individuals and their families with services and resources, while advocating locally and nationally to raise public awareness.

SANDS strives to inspire, educate and support families and communities living with Down Syndrome throughout Southern Arizona.
Task: Help SANDS express their key messages clearly and vibrantly with customized visual design details that complement the written content of their brochure. This brochure will be distributed to local hospitals and prenatal facilities to assist doctors and parents when given a Down Syndrome diagnosis for their baby. It outlines the services SANDS offer to support families on their journey.

Materials Provided: SANDS logo with brand colors (Navy & Yellow), current brochure with written copy to be included, photographs to be included.

Deliverables: Print-ready high-res brochure with original packaged file for Spanish translation.
I proposed including custom graphics and illustrations to break up the text and add a friendly element to the brochure. I also advised adding secondary colors, in addition to the logo colors, for variation.
Client feedback: they liked the idea of additional colors but wanted brighter/more vibrant colors. Client asked for the smiley face to be replaced with a different graphic, suggesting a butterfly or Down Syndrome ribbon, and loved the idea of shoes to illustrate the annual "Buddy Walk" fundraiser.
At the client's request, I used brighter secondary colors, including a lighter blue to tie everything together, to keep the bright colors from competing with each other too much. I replaced the smiley face with a DS ribbon, also adding a DNA strand and butterfly to the custom graphics. "Walk with Us" replaced "Buddy Walk" in the shoe illustration to avoid copyright issues.
